Check this! Tips for a Safe Winter Trip

Winter 2025 is coming soon; do you have any ideas regarding how to protect your electric heavy truck in a cold winter? We believe there is no need to mention its importance as harsh conditions such as cold weather and road salt could cause irreversible damage to your beloved vehicles. Read today’s piece to understand how to protect (electric) heavy trucks in winter. We wish you and your travel partners a safe trip.

Battery & Charging

  • Test battery charge regularly to avoid the cold temperature reduces its capacity.
  • Clean corrosion from terminals and ensure proper insulation.
  • Charge while warming the cab to prevent freezing.
  • Replace aging batteries proactively.

Cooling System

  • Maintain a 50/50 coolant-to-water ratio (check specs).
  • Inspect hoses for cracks, leaks, and brittleness.

Fuel System (Diesel)

  • Use winter-blend diesel with anti-gel additives.
  • Keep fuel tank at least half full to reduce condensation.
  • Replace dirty fuel filters to avoid clogging.

Air System & Brakes

  • Drain air tanks to remove moisture.
  • Ensure air dryer is functional and replace it if faulty.
  • Frozen moisture can disable air brakes.

Engine Block Heater

  • Install and use block heaters for easier cold starts.
  • Pre-warming reduces engine wear and improves ignition.

Tires & Traction

  • Check tread depth and tire pressure frequently.
  • Switch to winter or all-season tires for better grip.
  • Drive slowly on slippery surfaces
  • Brake and accelerate gently.
  • Maintain safe following distance and do not stop suddenly.

Windshield & Visibility

  • Use winter-rated wiper blades.
  • Fill washer reservoir with antifreeze-grade fluid.
  • Repair windshield chips before they worsen.

Rustproofing & Undercarriage

  • Apply undercoating to chassis and suspension.
  • Wash off salt regularly to prevent corrosion.

Belts & Hoses

  • Inspect serpentine belts, coolant hoses, and air intake hoses.
  • Replace any cracked or worn components.

Cold-Weather Driving Tips

  • Turn wheel gently before ignition to warm up steering system.
  • Remember three things on steep or slippery roads: 1) Disable ASR temporarily, 2) engage inter-axle and differential locks, and 3) downshift manually for better traction.
